Swing-Seat Democrat Faces Scrutiny for Silence on AOC Endorsement and Far-Left Candidates' Views

A Democratic congressional hopeful in one of the nation's most closely watched districts has not commented following an endorsement from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent progressive figure within the Democratic Party, congratulated former Biden administration official Cait Conley on her primary victory in a social media post published on Wednesday.

"I look forward to working together as a delegation as we fight for working families across New York," Ocasio-Cortez stated.

The post also extended congratulations to a Democrat seeking to replace retiring Rep. Jerrold Nadler, a New York Democrat, along with three socialist candidates who have received backing from New York City Council member Zohran Mamdani.

Conley has yet to acknowledge Ocasio-Cortez's support or comment on the trio of far-left candidates: longtime New York official Brad Lander, State Assembly member Claire Valdez, a New York Democrat, and activist Darializa Avila-Chevalier. These candidates have advocated for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), are vocal critics of Israel, and have pledged to champion the Palestinian cause in Congress.

Conley's general election opponent, Rep. Mike Lawler, a New York Republican, insists she must address these matters.

"The Hudson Valley deserves an answer, and so far all we've heard is your damning silence," Lawler remarked.

Progressive Endorsements Draw Scrutiny

Lander and Avila-Chevalier have previously called for defunding police departments, with Avila-Chevalier continuing to advocate for the abolition of prisons and an end to all deportations. Avila-Chevalier also shared a social media post that denied Israel's right to exist and was involved in forming a pro-Palestinian organization at Columbia University that called for "the total eradication of Western civilization."

The three candidates supported by Mamdani are anticipated to significantly increase the presence of the left-wing group known informally as "the Squad," which is closely associated with Ocasio-Cortez, who also supports abolishing ICE.

This scrutiny of Conley comes after she avoided directly criticizing socialist candidates during an interview on Thursday.

When questioned about socialist candidates who support prison abolition and have suggested the United States deserved the September 11 attacks, Conley discussed her personal background rather than directly answering the inquiry.

"I joined the Army and went to West Point because of 9/11 because I watched the suffering and pain that we as a nation, we as a state, we as the Hudson Valley, experienced that day," Conley explained. "And so when you talk about the American government's responsibility to the people, it is to keep it safe."

"While, you know, folks were elected down in New York City, in New York-17, Democratic voters chose a West Point grad and 16-year Army combat veteran to be their representative in this fight this fall," Conley added, referring to herself.

Separately, Aber Kawas, a socialist and pro-Palestinian activist who won a Democratic primary for a New York State Senate seat on Tuesday, appeared to justify the 9/11 attacks in a resurfaced video from 2017.

Candidate's Past Record and Competitive Race

Conley has previously faced examination regarding her role on former President Joe Biden's national security team. Lawler has contended that she downplayed her alleged involvement in the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan, which occurred during her tenure on the National Security Council.

This battleground race is expected to be among the most fiercely contested in the nation, with national Republicans poised to vigorously support Lawler’s campaign for a third term in the House.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report classifies the contest as a "toss-up," after adjusting its rating in favor of Democrats earlier this year.

In 2024, former Vice President Kamala Harris narrowly carried this swing district, where Democrats currently hold a significant voter registration advantage.
