Deshaun Watson Confronts Fan Backlash and Quarterback Competition After Underwhelming Performance

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson and the team's supporters openly expressed their dissatisfaction with each other during a recent preseason game, even as Watson is engaged in a direct competition with Shedeur Sanders for the starting position. This places Watson in a challenging dual battle.

The fan base has voiced displeasure over Watson's performance, noting his record of 19 touchdown passes across 19 games since signing his $230 million contract. His tenure with the team has been marked by a suspension, a season-ending shoulder injury, and two Achilles injuries, one of which sidelined him for an entire previous season. Despite being on the team, many fans do not view him as their ideal quarterback.

During his first appearance at Huntington Bank Field since his previous season-ending injury, Watson was met with resounding boos from the crowd.

"It sucks," remarked coach Todd Monken regarding the fan reception.

Watson, for his part, made it clear that any negative feelings from the fans were reciprocated.

"It's a disrespectful thing," Watson stated concerning the fan reaction. "So, yeah, I mean, I'm going to keep whatever I feel with me and my family internally on how I feel about that."

"Last time I played on this field, I tore my Achilles. And that same fan base, they cheered when I got hurt. So what does that have to do with anything about performance when a person gets hurt, especially for your own city?"

"And they cheer."

Watson indicated he has attempted to win over Browns fans. He believed that his efforts, including charity work in the community and dedication to returning to the field despite injuries, would earn him their support.

"I guess it hasn't," he added. "So that's why I say it's more, it's personal. It is what it is and there's only so much you can do to change that."

Performance Takes Center Stage in QB Battle

While fan sentiment is a significant issue for Watson, it is not his only concern. Although fans can voice their opinions from the stands, the ultimate decision on the starting quarterback rests with Coach Monken, who is evaluating the competition between Watson and Sanders.

Monken emphasized that performance is the critical factor.

"They don't want to get booed, it's about playing good football," Monken asserted. "Let's play good quarterback. Let's play good on offense, play good as a team, and then you don't have to worry about all that."

"When we play good football, everybody will be fine."

In the recent game, Sanders' performance outshone Watson's. Sanders completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. He started the game and played the entire first half, primarily with Cleveland's backup players against Buffalo's reserves.

Watson then took the field in the third quarter, playing with second- and third-string teammates against Buffalo's second- and third-string defenders, and he struggled. He completed 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and also threw an interception. It was noted that Watson may have accumulated more boos than passing yards.

Uncertainty Surrounds Starting Quarterback Decision

Monken, in collaboration with other leadership within the Browns organization, had initially aimed to name a starting quarterback by the beginning of the upcoming week. However, that timeline is now uncertain.

Watson, with a hint of sarcasm, suggested that if he secures the starting role, he might feel like he's playing 17 away games this coming season, given the reaction from Browns fans. This scenario might not unfold, as Monken expressed considerable satisfaction with Sanders' performance.

"He plays with a certain amount of confidence," the coach remarked. "He has gotten a lot better at getting rid of the ball. He wants to make a play."

Significantly, Sanders did not receive boos from the Browns' fan base during his time on the field.
