Mets' Jefry Yan's Signature Strikeout Celebration Goes Viral After Hilarious Early Attempt
Relief pitcher Jefry Yan prematurely launched into his signature post-strikeout leap, leading to a memorable moment before securing a crucial out in the Mets' walk-off victory.

Relief pitcher Jefry Yan has quickly become a fan favorite among New York Mets supporters, largely due to his distinctive acrobatic celebration after striking out a batter. This energetic display has garnered significant attention, particularly across social media platforms.
However, during a thrilling Saturday afternoon contest at Citi Field, which culminated in a walk-off victory for the Mets against the Washington Nationals, Yan's enthusiasm led to a comical misstep. The rookie pitcher launched into his signature move prematurely, before the pitch was officially called strike three.
Making his debut in front of the home crowd, Yan was on the mound in the top of the ninth inning with two outs and an 0-2 count on Washington's Nasim Nuñez. Believing he had delivered a perfect fastball to the outside corner for the third strike, Yan initiated his celebratory leap. The home plate umpire, however, saw the pitch differently, calling it a ball. Yan, mid-air in his characteristic spring-loaded jump, quickly realized the lack of a strikeout call. Upon landing, he immediately tapped the brim of his cap, signaling for an automated ball-strike (ABS) system review. Despite the challenge, the umpire's original call of a ball was upheld.
"Now, that was funny," remarked veteran Mets play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen during the SNY broadcast. After the brief moment of levity, Yan refocused, ensuring his initial gaffe didn't derail his performance. Just two pitches later, he successfully struck out Nuñez with a slider, finally earning the right to perform his celebrated move.
Dramatic Ninth Inning Secures Walk-Off Win
At the point of Yan's strikeout, the Mets were trailing by a single run as they headed into the bottom of the ninth. Their objective was to score at least one run to extend the game into extra innings, but the offense had a more decisive outcome in mind.
The inning began with a walk drawn by Brett Baty, quickly followed by a single from Jorge Polanco, placing the potential winning run on base. The momentum escalated when Francisco Alvarez drove a double to left field, bringing Baty home to tie the game and advancing the winning run to third base.
The decisive blow came from Francisco Lindor, who delivered a single that brought home the winning run, sparking a joyous walk-off celebration across Citi Field, shared by Yan and his teammates.
First MLB Win for Rookie Pitcher
The dramatic victory marked a significant milestone for Yan, who earned his first career Major League Baseball win after delivering a strong performance, pitching 1.2 scoreless innings for the team.
The 29-year-old rookie has had an eventful season, starting in the minor leagues where his distinctive strikeout celebration first gained recognition. Now, in his first five appearances for the New York club, the major league audience has witnessed his unique flair.
While his enthusiasm is infectious, Yan might consider waiting for the official call from the umpire before launching into his signature jump and ground tap in future games. However, his desire to perform the celebration in front of the home crowd at Citi Field was evident.
"I felt really welcome today," Yan conveyed through a translator, reflecting on his inaugural appearance at Citi Field.
In his Saturday outing, Yan recorded three strikeouts, and he currently maintains an impressive 1.80 ERA.
