J.T. Poston Records Challenging 12-Stroke Score on Single Hole at Travelers Championship

Even for the world's elite athletes, the sport of golf can present unexpected humbling moments. This was evident during Sunday's final round of the Travelers Championship, where professional golfer J.T. Poston experienced a highly unusual sequence of events.

Ranked 32nd globally, Poston approached the par-5 13th hole with an opportunity for a strong score, reaching the greenside in just two shots. However, what unfolded next was a dramatic unraveling, resulting in a 12-stroke score on the single hole that significantly impacted his performance for the day.

Although Poston was not vying for the tournament title, this challenging hole ultimately saw him conclude the event near the bottom of the leaderboard. The 12 strokes on the 13th were a primary factor in his finishing 6-over for the round and 1-over for the tournament, placing him 69th among the 72 competitors who made the cut.

A Difficult Turn on the 13th Hole

The sequence of events on the 13th hole began promisingly for Poston. His initial tee shot landed perfectly in the center of the fairway. His second shot then found a greenside bunker, a position often manageable for professional golfers given their adept short game, potentially setting up a birdie opportunity on the par-5.

However, the situation quickly deteriorated. Poston's bunker shot came out short, leaving him with a chip. While a solid chip could still salvage a par, this proved to be the start of a much larger struggle. His fourth shot sailed beyond the green and ultimately landed in the water hazard on the opposite side.

What followed was a series of unfortunate attempts. Poston was forced to take three separate drops as his subsequent efforts to get the ball onto the green repeatedly rolled back into the water. It wasn't until his 10th stroke that he finally managed to place the ball in a puttable position.

The dramatic hole concluded with Poston taking his 11th stroke, a putt which he missed, before tapping in his 12th stroke to finally finish the challenging hole.

Poston Reflects on the Challenges

Following the round, Poston discussed the difficulties he faced with the multiple drop balls repeatedly finding the water. He described the specific conditions of the greenside area:

It’s not really rough, where you can kind of blast it out. It’s into the grain, but it looks like you can get enough golf ball on it, which is why I kept trying to hit a good chip.

When asked if he considered putting the ball from the greenside rough, especially after his chipping attempts proved unsuccessful, Poston explained his reasoning against it:

I feel like it’s just going to hop and that takes all the speed out of it. And you’ve got this big false front you got to get it over. So my worry with trying to putt it was it would not have enough speed to really get there.

Tournament Conclusion

The challenging 13th hole was followed by another setback for Poston, who recorded a double bogey on the par-4 14th. He ultimately completed his final round with a score of 76.

In contrast to Poston's finish, the Travelers Championship itself concluded in dramatic fashion, necessitating a playoff on Monday. Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler ended regulation play tied at 21-under par, with Scheffler sinking a crucial putt to force the extra holes after Hovland narrowly missed a winning putt on the 18th hole.
