Olympic Champion Calls for Clear WNBA Eligibility Rules
Three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Nancy Hogshead has launched a public appeal to the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), urging the league to explicitly define player eligibility for biological females. Hogshead's initiative, a Change.org petition, aims to prompt the WNBA to clarify the meaning of "woman" within its player eligibility criteria.
The petition, which began on August 14, has garnered significant support, collecting more than 11,000 signatures to date. Hogshead has expressed her ambition for the petition to reach 100,000 signatures, emphasizing its broad appeal.
"It’s an 80/20 issue across the country, so we can do it," Hogshead stated. "We have well over a million people who’ve engaged with our materials that we put out about the petition. We just gotta get them to sign on."
WNBA's Current Stance on Player Eligibility
The WNBA's collective bargaining agreement, set for 2026, stipulates that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." However, the agreement does not provide further definition for the term "woman," nor does it include specific provisions regarding gender identity or sex assigned at birth.
The discussion around eligibility gained traction following announcements by former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, who declared their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, asserting they identify as women. While league sources have since dismissed these announcements as "publicity stunts" and affirmed their ineligibility, Hogshead believes these declarations highlighted what she perceives as inconsistencies in policies centered on gender self-identification.
"I love it that they came forward because it just shows the hypocrisy of the WNBA, and it shows the hypocrisy of gender ideology," Hogshead commented. "For them to come forward and, you know, threaten to play in the WNBA and show up for the draft, it just shows just how ridiculous that gender ideology is."
League Responds Amidst Broader Debate
In response to the evolving discourse, the WNBA previously indicated that there were "no immediate eligibility matters" affecting the league's operations. The organization also condemned what it described as "bad-faith efforts" to leverage the debate in a manner that would "demean or marginalize others." Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has confirmed that league officials are continuing discussions on the matter with the players’ union and other key stakeholders.
Hogshead’s petition coincides with ongoing demonstrations outside WNBA games, which have shown support for Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Earlier this summer, Cunningham publicly voiced her opposition to the participation of transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.
"I really appreciate her for the stand that she has taken on behalf of women," Hogshead remarked about Cunningham. "If anything, the more people see of Sophie Cunningham, the more they like her."
