Oklahoma Democratic Newcomer Wins Runoff, Vows Trump Impeachment If Elected
A registered nurse with no prior political experience defeated a lawyer to secure the Democratic Senate nomination in a deeply Republican state.

A political newcomer in Oklahoma has achieved an unexpected victory in the Democratic Senate runoff, declaring that if elected, her primary focus would be on initiating impeachment proceedings against former President Donald Trump.
N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas, a registered nurse embarking on her first political campaign, triumphed over Jim Priest, a seasoned lawyer and nonprofit executive, to secure the Democratic nomination for a U.S. Senate seat in Oklahoma. Thomas, despite her lack of prior political office, garnered the highest percentage of votes among five contenders in the initial June primary election.
This sets the stage for a challenging general election in Oklahoma, a state that has not sent a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in over three decades.
Beyond her immediate focus, Thomas's campaign platform outlines various policy objectives. These include advocating for increased teacher salaries, working to restore the protections of Roe v. Wade, and expanding the Affordable Care Act, alongside other standard Democratic proposals.
Thomas Prioritizes Impeachment of Former President Trump
During a recent interview with KOSU, an NPR affiliate, Thomas was questioned about the Republican nominee, Representative Kevin Hern of Oklahoma, and his strong support for Trump. She was asked how she would approach a working relationship with the former president if she were to be elected.
"As I've stated, I am kind, but not overly agreeable. My commitment is to work as diligently as possible to ensure that within my first 100 days, we successfully impeach, remove, and convict," Thomas asserted. "They would have to literally pry that pen from my cold, dead hands before I would tolerate this administration continuing its actions.""So, I hope that provides a clear answer," she continued. "My intention is to remove, impeach, remove, and convict. That is the sole objective. That is the answer."
Uphill Battle Against Republican Incumbent
Before pursuing her stated objectives, Thomas must first navigate the November general election against Representative Hern. This presents a formidable challenge, especially considering that former President Trump secured Oklahoma by a margin of nearly 35 points in the 2024 election cycle.
While Thomas has demonstrated an ability to defy expectations, securing approximately 45% of the vote in the initial Democratic primary and then defeating Priest despite her lack of political experience, Representative Hern represents a significantly different opponent.
Hern has accumulated a substantial campaign fund, which at one point in the current election cycle approached $10 million. In stark contrast, Thomas's campaign has reportedly raised just under $60,000.
Furthermore, Representative Hern benefits from the endorsement of former President Trump and has publicly committed to advancing the former president's key policy initiative, the SAVE America Act.
"Progressive Democrats such as N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas are profoundly disconnected from the values of Oklahomans and the direction they envision for our nation," Representative Hern stated. "Former President Trump and Republicans are dedicated to delivering tangible results. N’Kiyla Jasmine Thomas and the radical left are preoccupied with partisan political maneuvers against a president Oklahomans overwhelmingly supported."
