Spanish Broadcaster Accused of Omitting Israeli Hurdler During European Athletics Championships Introductions

A Spanish national public television channel is facing criticism after an alleged oversight during its broadcast of the European Athletics Championships, held in Birmingham, England. The controversy centers on the introduction of an Israeli athlete during a televised event.

RTVE, Spain's public broadcasting service, was covering a hurdling competition where participants from various nations were preparing at their starting blocks. As the broadcast camera showcased each competitor, the commentators typically announced their name and the country they represented. However, when the camera focused on Omri Shiff, an Israeli hurdler, the commentators reportedly diverted their attention to another athlete who seemed to be taking an extended time to get ready. The introductions then resumed once the camera moved from Shiff to a Hungarian participant, with subsequent athletes being identified by name and nationality.

Observers noted that even without understanding Spanish, the shift in commentary and the noticeable pause during Shiff's screen time indicated a break in the standard introductions. An audible silence was reportedly heard as Shiff was on screen, followed by a male commentator speaking. Furthermore, after the camera transitioned to the Hungarian athlete, a female commentator was observed to laugh and make a brief remark before the introductions continued as usual.

Broadcaster Issues Apology

Following the incident, RTVE released a public apology through a statement provided to The Jewish Chronicle. The broadcaster expressed remorse for the oversight:

We sincerely regret not having named all the athletes who appeared on screen during the broadcasts on Teledeporte [sports channel], as happened in the case of the Israeli athlete Omar Shiff. This situation was exclusively due to the complexity of the long athletics sessions and the dynamics of live broadcasting – such as trackside commentary or production requirements – and was in no way related to political, ideological or religious reasons. Our commitment is to give visibility to every participant, and we work to achieve this in every broadcast. We reiterate our apology to the athlete affected.

The statement emphasized that the omission was a result of the challenges inherent in live sports broadcasting, including lengthy athletics sessions, trackside commentary, and production demands, rather than any political, ideological, or religious motivations. RTVE affirmed its dedication to showcasing every participant and apologized again to the athlete involved.
