Former President Donald Trump embarked on his initial presidential journey aboard a recently refitted Boeing 747, designated as Air Force One, traveling to Medora, North Dakota. The purpose of the trip was to commemorate the inauguration of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and advocate for conservation initiatives linked to the upcoming 250th anniversary of America's founding.
Speaking to journalists at Joint Base Andrews, the former president shared his enthusiasm for the maiden voyage. He described the aircraft as "maybe the greatest commercial plane ever built," recounting a conversation where he was assured it was "the best plane ever built."
The aircraft in question is a Boeing 747-8i, valued at approximately $400 million, which was a gift from the Qatari government and subsequently customized for presidential operations. Trump expressed his excitement, stating, "It's something nobody's ever seen anything like it." He further noted that the plane had been "made appropriate for a president," highlighting its advanced security features and "complex stuff" that includes various sophisticated functionalities.
He also contrasted the new plane with its predecessor, which he mentioned was around 36 years old. He suggested that the older model "really didn't look appropriate for our country" when juxtaposed with modern aircraft, implying a preference for a more visible display of national prestige.
Honoring Theodore Roosevelt's Legacy
In Medora, the former president was scheduled to meet with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and other dignitaries. The visit centered on the official opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library, where Trump aimed to underscore Roosevelt's enduring commitment to conservation.
Upon their arrival at the museum, Trump and Burgum were greeted by a ceremonial escort of Rough Riders on horseback, preceding their tour of the presidential center.
The 26th U.S. President, Theodore Roosevelt, was widely recognized for his deep affinity for nature. His presidency saw a significant expansion of federal protections for natural resources and public lands. He was instrumental in establishing numerous national parks and monuments, and in bolstering the U.S. Forest Service.
"The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired."
This profound statement from Roosevelt is prominently displayed on a wall within the museum, reflecting his environmental philosophy.
Renewed Focus on Public Lands Funding
During his visit, Trump was slated to sign the "Great American Outdoors Act Reauthorization." This legislative measure builds upon prior acts passed by both the 45th and 47th presidential administrations, providing renewed funding in anticipation of the nation's 250th anniversary.
The reauthorized act is designed to sustain an annual investment of approximately $1.9 billion. These funds are allocated for crucial deferred maintenance initiatives across public lands, encompassing repairs for infrastructure such as roads, bridges, trails, campgrounds, visitor centers, and water systems.
