Jewish House Democrat Recalls Colleague's Remark: "All the Jews Are Rich," Dismissing Antisemitism Concerns

Vermont Representative Becca Balint, a Democrat, recently shared an account of a fellow House Democrat allegedly dismissing concerns about antisemitism by stating that "all the Jews are rich." This disclosure came during a conversation with a news outlet, highlighting growing tensions within progressive political circles.

Balint was among several Jewish Democratic politicians who spoke about increasing anxieties over antisemitism emerging from grassroots campaigns. These sentiments are reportedly impacting established political figures, including California state Senator Scott Wiener.

Lawmaker Recalls Troubling Exchange

Representative Balint expressed being profoundly disturbed after witnessing Senator Wiener subjected to heckling by anti-Israel activists. The incident, she noted, targeted his historical support for Israel and his Jewish heritage.

The news report described Balint's reaction as a "familiar ache," drawing parallels to instances where her own identity as a lesbian has been questioned, or when Jewish politicians face accusations of "dual loyalty." It was in this context that she mentioned the unnamed House Democratic colleague who, at a bipartisan antisemitism task force meeting, reportedly commented, "I didn’t really think there was any antisemitism anymore because all the Jews are rich."

Navigating Identity and Policy

While Representative Balint has aligned with some progressive Democrats in critiquing Israel's actions in Gaza, she conveyed a personal apprehension about a potential "day of reckoning" due to her continued support for the Jewish state.

"I know at some point there will be a day of reckoning because I still believe that Jews should have a homeland," Balint stated. "There will be people — I think some of my own supporters — who will turn on me because I still believe in a two-state solution. I still do. I still believe that Israel should be safe and secure. I believe that the Palestinians have been so ill-treated for so long and deserve a safe and secure homeland. I do not believe Israel should be dismantled."

Jewish Democrats Feel Sidelined

Other Jewish Democrats voiced concerns that positions on Israel are increasingly becoming a political "litmus test" for them, even when they advocate for other progressive causes and have been critical of the Israeli government.

New York City comptroller Mark Levine remarked on this phenomenon, saying,

"The experience of being a Jewish Democrat is to feel like … no matter what the topic — it can be affordable housing — it’s just a matter of time before someone links it to Israel."

He questioned the scope of "litmus test issues," noting that,

"As far as I know, at this point, it is exclusively a list of questions on Israel. We’re progressives. We’re absolutely willing to criticize the actions of the current government of Israel. And we are. But we’re feeling excluded from many spaces right now, and it’s hard to conclude it’s not because we’re Jewish."

Michigan state Representative Noah Arbit expressed his belief that antisemitism is frequently disguised as criticism of Israel. He shared a personal reflection on his political future:

"After I leave office, I’m not sure I’ll ever call myself a Democrat again. I don’t know how Jews can feel like you can align yourself with any political movement when the grassroots are so hostile to who you are and your community."
